New vehicle registration plate deadline extended

BS Economy Bureau

The government has decided to postpone the date of introduction of the proposed high security vehicle registration plates to June 30, 2002, in view of the requests received from various state governments asking for more time to implement the decision.

As per the new schedule, all vehicles to be registered on and after June 30, 2002 shall mandatorily have be fitted with such plates, as against an earlier deadline of September 28, 2001 set by the Union ministry of road transport and highways.

For vehicles registered before June 30, 2002, a time period of two years from the June 2002 deadline will be granted for changing over to the new registration plates. As per the new format, a commercial vehicle will have yellow background with black letter plates while a non-commercial vehicle will have white background and black letters.

The new high security number plates will have letters and numbers embossed and hot-stamped and also have a chromium-based hologram, containing the Ashoka emblem with 'Bharat Sarkar' and 'Government of India' inscribed by hot-stamping.

A hot-stamping film bearing the inscription, "India", will be applied on the letters and numerals of the licence number and a permanent identification number of minimum 7 digits will be laser-branded on the reflective sheeting of the registration number plate.
