Trading strategy for September 18, 2001

Outlook: Panic-driven markets create opportunities for traders. Unfortunately mechanism to take overnight short positions is absent in the market and long positions are anyways not recommended in the market.

In this scenario, traders are left with little choice and can take only intra-day positions. After such a large one-way fall, even these opportunities are likley to dry up and chances of a more volatile market are higher.

A bounce after a weak opening can certainly not be ruled out and a 20-25 per cent retracement of the fall is likely. Traders willing to take this kind of a bounce should do it in the indices and only in the options market, where the risk is limited to the premium one pays.

The main trend remains downward and no positions in individual stocks are recommended. Investors are still recommended to stay away from the markets.
