Krushi Bank systems administrator surrenders

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Ambati Ramakrishna, computer systems administrator at the scam-tainted Krushi Co-operative Urban Bank, surrendered before the Crime Investigation Department in Hyderabad on Monday evening.

State police spokesman Shujath Ali said that Ramakrishna was absconding along with the former chairman and other directors of the bank ever since the scam broke out on August 11.

The accused, who carried a reward of Rs 500,000 on his head, gave himself up to the CID investigating officer Mohammed Wajid Siddique.

The 25-year-old Ramakrishna was earlier employed with Halcyon Softech Limited, which was promoted by Krushi Bank chairman K Venkateswara Rao. He was stated to be a close confidante of Venkateswara Rao.

He was much sought-after by the CID, which is probing the scam, because he knew all about the transactions of the bank and its elusive former chairman.

The CID, RBI and Registrar of Co-operative Societies officials were so far unable to look into the computerised accounts since the password of the computers could not be traced. With the help of Ramakrishna, they would be able to decode the 'secret' transactions of Venkateswara Rao stored in the computer floppies and CD-ROMs seized by the CID.

The accused is being produced before the Metropolitan Sessions Judge K C Bhanu on Tuesday for seeking police custody.

So far, Krushi Bank vice-chairman K Venugopal Rao and director K Ramamurthy were taken into custody by the CID. Former chairman Venkateswara Rao and other directors, who all carry Rs 500,000 each for clues on their whereabouts, are still at large.
