Blueprint for power reforms ready: Prabhu

The power ministry has formulated a blue print and a holistic plan, besides effecting structural changes for the development of the power sector in the country, Union Power Minister Suresh Prabhu announced on Friday.

Speaking after inaugurating a one-day national conference on Power sector reforms , jointly organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and the Power Finance Corporation in Madras, he said once the blue print was put in place the states should take steps to implement it. Information technology would also be used in solving the problems of the power sector, he added.

He said the capacity addition plans under the tenth and the 11th plans would be fully achieved.

"We have already started the preparatory works and it will be implemented. All the targets will be fully met," he added.

Prabhu said the Centre was also taking necessary steps to create a national power grid. The setting up of the grid would enable the Centre to transmit power to those states, which were facing power shortage. The southern states would be the major beneficiaries once the national grid became a reality.

The Centre was working towards achieving the vision of Power for all by 2012and in the next two years the ministry would substantially improve the quality of power to the consumers.

Stating that state electricity boards should take steps to identify the actual loss instead of quantifying it, the union minister said, "if the power generated is efficiently transmitted and distributed, there is no reason why we should lose money. All the SEBs can make profit and for this we need good governance."

The government would organise 2,000 road shows all over the country to educate the people about the problems of the power sector and how to save power. The road shows should be further institutionalised by the SEBs by regularly interacting with the consumers.
