Provide full protection to Balco workers: SC

BS Economy Bureau

The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Chhatisgarh government to provide full protection to the workers of Bharat Aluminium Company (Balco), their families and the company's management.

It also passed an order restraining the state government or its functionaries from disrupting supply of water, electricity and food to the Balco plant or township.

In Raipur, a state government spokesman said, "The government respects the apex court's order and assures all protection to those who want to work in the Balco plant."

Acting on a petition filed by the Centre, a bench comprising Justice BN Kirpal and Justice VN Khare stated that no court, except the apex court, shall deal with the subject matter of the controversies raised in the petition.

"The state of Chhatisgarh, the chief secretary and the director general of police, in particular, are directed to afford full protection to the workers, their families and the management inside and outside the Balco plant in Korba so that they do not suffer physical harm of any kind," the court said.
