BALCO unions plan indefinite strike

Immediately after the government signed the sale deed with Sterlite Industries for divestment in BALCO, workers of the aluminium company proposed to go on an indefinite strike to oppose the sale.

"We have earlier submitted a strike notice to the Mines Ministry. We will talk to the other six unions to finalise our joint strategy... most likely an indefinite strike," Balco Employees Union General Secretary P N Sharma told PTI.

He said BEU was talking to the unions of 27 other PSUs to seek their support on the issue.

Sharma said that if the union decides to go on an indefinite strike at all its centres the company will stand to lose around Rs 80 million per day.

The seven unions in BALCO, including the BEU, have come together on a common forum - BALCO Bachao Sangharsh Samiti - to chalk out a plan of action.

The seven unions include those affiliated to the BMS, CITU and INTUC.

Government on Friday sold 51% of its stake in BALCO to Sterlite Industries for a sum of Rs 5.51 billion.
