Balco effects en-mass transfers at Delhi office

Aluminium major Balco, which witnessed a prolonged employees' agitation against privatisation recently transferred its entire top management to Korba in Chhattisgarh on Wednesday. It is seen as part of a move to shift its head office from New Delhi. The unions, however, said that the move was in 'violation' of shareholders agreement by the new management.

The en-masse transfer, within weeks of restoration of normalcy in the company after a 67-day-long strike, affected among others the company secretary S C Hans.

While Balco managing director S C Krishnan, a nominee of the Sterlite Industries which bought 51 per cent government stake in the company, was not available for comments, officials confirmed the move, widely decried by the unions as 'vindictive'.

When contacted Hans confirmed that he was among the officials transferred from Delhi office but declined to comment any further.

Company officials said on condition of anonymity that 45 top and medium level executives were given about two weeks to report at Korba.

Balco's Delhi office has a staff strength of 160 employees. However the move seems to have left the regional sales office unaffected.

Criticising the move general secretary of Balco Employees Union, P N Sharma said that the move has vitiated the already tense atmosphere prevailing in the company.
