No need for PM to resign, says Naidu

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Telugu Desam Party, a key ally of the National Democratic Alliance government, has said that there is no need for Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to resign.

The TDP, however, said that the Centre must investigate the UTI episode thoroughly.

In his brief reaction to a local TV channel in Hyderabad on Tuesday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu said: "There is no need for the prime minister to resign. But the central government should investigate into the UTI episode."

He said that he would bring pressure on the NDA government to bring the culprits involved in the multi-million-rupee UTI scam to book.

"Scams like the UTI scandal should not be allowed to recur. The central government must take necessary steps in this direction," he added.

It is understood that Naidu spoke to the Prime Minister over phone around 1.30 pm on Tuesday and discussed the latest developments.

The TDP, with its 29 members in the Lok Sabha, is the second largest party supporting the NDA coalition. The party, however, claims that it is extending only "issue-based, conditional support from outside" to the NDA government.

The TDP does not shares ministerial berths in the Vajpayee cabinet. It is also not a constituent of the NDA.
