UTI small investors to agitate

The Madras-based UTI small investors' forum has decided to hold a demonstration in front of the UTI's city office on Tuesday, in protest against the recent suspension of the US-64 scheme.

According to a forum press release in Madras on Monday, the demonstration, besides "expressing indignation over the way the finances of UTI have been tampered with, will demand that the Union government initiate steps to protect small investors from the vagaries of the market. ".

The release said that though the government proclaimed it would take steps to protect the interests of small investors, it was not clear how it proposed to bail out UTI from the current crisis.

"US-64 has been treated as an investor-friendly scheme by many, because it was catering to the needs of small investors in terms of safety returns and liquidity. But instead, UTI had allowed itself to be used by corporates for their designs", the release alleged.
