Hind Lever says quake damaged some units

India's largest consumer goods firm Hindustan Lever Ltd said on Monday last week's killer earthquake in Gujarat damaged some of its facilities there.

An export oriented personal products factory and a rice unit in the port town of Kandla were damaged and it could take between four to six weeks to resume operations at the facilities, it said in a statement.

"The company is making alternative sourcing arrangements from plants elsewhere in the country to meet export requirements hitherto supplied from these plants," the statement said.

Lever owns four plants in the state, which was struck by a devastating earthquake last Friday killing nearly 20,000 people.

The company also outsources products from three other locations.

Lever did not reveal the contribution to total turnover from these units.

"The company is confident that normalcy to its sourcing will be achieved soon, and there will be no serious business impact to its exports or popular foods (salt) business," it added.

HLL is about 51 per cent owned by Anglo-Dutch conglomerate Unilever Plc and makes soaps, detergents, personal care products and processed foods.
