Gujarat pegs quake loss at Rs 208.75 bn

Gujarat said on Saturday that the total loss because of the killer earthquake would be Rs 208.75 billion ($4.50 billion).

"The loss to household is Rs 111.95 billion," P K Laheri, principal secretary to the state's chief minister, said.

He added that the industry has reported a loss of Rs 50 billion, commercial establishments Rs 30 billion, public utilities (including water supply and sewerage) Rs 6 billion, and public infrastructure (including power supply) Rs 10.8 billion.

He, however, admitted that the figure may go up "as we process the claims and other things."

Laheri said the state government estimated the death toll in the quake that struck Gujarat on January 26 to be anywhere between 28,000 and 30,000.

"About 16,000 bodies have been recovered so far," he added.
