Karnataka to seek report from Huawei Technologies

The Karnataka government will seek a report from Chinese telecom major Huawei Technologies in Bangalore, regarding its reported help to the Taliban regime and Pakistan to upgrade their telecommunication network, a top official said on Tuesday.

"We have called top executives of the company on Friday. We will seek details regarding their operations and clients," State Information Technology Secretary Vivek Kulkarni said.

"Our intention is to save the Indian professionals in case they (the company) close down," he said.

Huawei at its R & D centre has deployed over 500 software engineers, including 178 Chinese.

Kulkarni said two officials each from the State IT department and Software Technology Parks of India had already paid a visit to the Huawei office.

"The IT department has not received any communication from the central government seeking details regarding the company," he said.

Huawei's senior executive (public relations) Gilbert J reiterated on Tuesday that there was no truth in the reports, alleging that the company had developed telecom surveillance equipment for the Taliban regime.

He also said their company was doing business in Iraq prior to the Gulf War but stopped its operations following the UN sanctions on Baghdad.

While dismissing as 'totally untrue' reports about the company's alleged help to the Taliban, he had however admitted on Monday that Pakistan was part of the marketing network of their parent company.
