Jayalalithaa refutes Fernandes charge

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday refuted the charge of NDA convenor George Fernandes that she had recommended the name of P S Subramanyam for the post of UTI chief.

"I do not know anything about Subramanyam. I did not recommend his name for the post of UTI chief", she said in a statement in Madras on Monday.

Condemning Fernandes for his statement on this subject on Sunday in Madras, Jayalalithaa said she was shocked to learn such a statement from the NDA convenor.

"Fernandes has made such a false statement with a view to settling some old scores and also diverting the attention of the people and I totally deny it", she said.

Fernandes had told newsmen in Madras on Sunday that Subramanyam was appointed UTI chief on the recommendation of Jayalalithaa.

'She (Jayalalithaa) gave the name. I myself wrote it down and forwarded it to the PMO. Jayalalithaa insisted on his name', Fernandes had said.
