UTI muddle sparks uproar in Lok Sabha too

The Lok Sabha on Thursday witnessed uproarious scenes with Congress members trooping into the well demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the UTI muddle.

When former Defence Minister and Samata Party leader George Fernandes, who was participating in the discussion on an adjournment motion on UTI affairs, said the UTI fiasco was a conspiracy against the government by certain outside elements, Congress members objected to this and rushed to the well.

A remark by Congress member Mani Shanker Aiyar angered BJP members who too moved towards the well only to be pacified by senior leaders.

Congress members continued to shout 'We want JPC, we want JPC', only to be countered by BJP members who said 'We want BJP, we want BJP'.

As the din continued for over 20 minutes, both sides accused each other of using unparliamentary language.

Repeated pleas by Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed to members to resume their seats fell on deaf ears.

Continuing his speech, Fernandes said there was a conspiracy to 'malign the government and slow down the country's economic growth'.

He sought a thorough probe into the functioning of UTI since 1994 and the role of Reliance in its affairs.

Fernandes said UTI employees too had indulged in insider trading and stringent action should be taken against them.

The Samata Party leader wanted implementation of the recommendations of the Deepak Parekh Committee with regard to UTI.
