Maruti bags order for 150 cabs in Bangladesh

Maruti Udyog Limited tailed Hyundai Motor India Limited into Bangladesh, having bagged a $850,000 order to supply 150 units of Esteem to ply as taxis in the neighbouring nation.

This comes close on the heels of Hyundai having bagged an order to supply its accent as luxury cabs for Bangladesh.

The esteem cabs, painted yellow, will ply as retail luxury taxis in Bangladesh, senior officials in the company's export division said. Each Esteem cab is worth $5,600.

This is the first lot of Esteems that are being shipped to the country, which allows import of only 2,000 new cars in a single year.

Prior to this, Hyundai Motor India had bagged an order to export 55 cars to Bangladesh to ply as taxis. This includes 30 units of Accent and 25 units of Santro. The cars would be used as special purpose taxis, on the lines of rent-a-cab in India, HMIL president A P Gandhi said.

Hyundai is, in fact, planning to make India an export base for fully built cars and components. The company had recently exported 760 cars to Algeria. HMIL is targeting to gross $60 million export turnover during the 2000 calendar year. It has targetted to export 6,000 completely built units of cars from India and earn around $40 million during the current year.

Export of components would account for the remaining $20 million, Gandhi said.
