Nifty gains 4 points

The National Stock Exchange opened on a buoyant note. However, pivotals could not maintain their opening levels at the end of session as market participants were disappointed over the Reserve Bank of India's slack season credit policy.

Though the NSE-50 index closed marginally higher as against the previous level, the market witnessed weak trading, marketmen said.

Mirroring the trend, the Nifty opened at 1,151.30, touched the day's high of 1,178.05, fell to touch the day's low of 1,147.00 and finally closed at 1,151.10 points, showing a net gain of 4.30 points as against the previous close of 1,146.80.

The NSE -50 index advanced by 3.75 points to 1,003.70 points as against the previous close of 999.95, and the midcap index gained by 1.25 points to 1,553.60 points as against the previous close of 1552.35.

The total turnover was Rs 12.95 billion. About 6,129 million shares changed hands in 199,904 trades. The turnover from debentures was Rs 80.1 million.

About 561 scrips firmed up, 496 declined and 63 remained unchanged. Around 122 securities hit their price bands, an NSE release said.
