Video: Indian's are gorging on French food

Last updated on: October 16, 2012 07:00 IST

In much of Europe, and the United Kingdom in particular, Indian cuisine's popularity is well documented -- a spicy, flavoursome and exciting treat often saved for the weekend. But in India quite the reverse is happening.

A growing exposure to the culture and tastes of the West has seen a rise in popularity for more European food. The Indian appetite, which once dismissed occidental cuisine as bland and too expensive is now exploring the subtlety of snails and raw beef. Hunger for French foods in New Delhi has seen a spurt in the number of not just French restaurants, but French pastry shops as well.

Those behind some of the new outlets, such as the L'Opera patisserie's chief operating officer, Pierre Nicollier, say that French food once seen as high-brow and posh is now being marketed as an affordable treat available for all not just the country's elite.
