Munnar

Rediff reader Meera Gopalakrishnan shares with us these images and experiences from her recent trip the Kashmir of the South!

It was in July this year we decided to take a break from our hectic schedule and spend a relaxed weekend in the hills of Munnar also known as the Kashmir of the South.

We had booked a valley view room in a hotel called Misty Mountain. True to the name the view of the valley from our room was spectacular.

The lush greenery and a small stream winding through it will simply take your breath away. We had a hearty breakfast at the resort and started our tour.

The first point was Rajamalai. Here the tourists are taken in special buses in batches. The highlight of this point is the view from the top.

Buses drop you at a certain point and from there you have to walk a couple of km from where you can have the beautiful view of Munnar. Sadly we couldn't completely enjoy the view as it was raining.

After Rajamalai we had lunch and then proceeded to Mattupetty Dam and Echopoint.

Again the rain played a spoilsport and we couldn't go for boating in the Dam.

However we enjoyed a good time in Echopoint. This place is called Echopoint because we can hear the echo from other side of the river.

After this we visited a spice farm and learned about different type of spices. After the spice farm visit we returned to the hotel.

Next morning we visited the Rose Garden. This place had a soothing effect on me because of the beautiful flowers all around.

The flowers looked fresh and we spent a lot of time there photographing each type of flower.

After Rose Garden we went to Munnar town and purchased some local specialities -- tea and coffee powder, spices and homemade chocolates.

By afternoon we started our return journey and reached Thiruvananthapuram by 8pm.

Some tips for the people travelling to Munnar:

If you are looking for a holiday that is full of activity like trekking etc Munnar is not the place for you.

However if you are a nature lover and you enjoy watching beautiful waterfalls, lush greenery and flowers, this place allows you to blend with nature. So for having a leisurely holiday plan a weekend to Munnar!
