Holi is not just about gujiyas and bhang, we bring to you some other food options for Holi, which are not only tasty but also healthy.

We put together a menu just right for the festival and season.

These easy-to-make recipes can be assembled and served last minute.

SPICY NUTS

Ingredients

This recipe works best with peanuts, cashew nuts, pine nuts or almonds.

Salt
Ghee
Red chili powder
Lime juice
Chat masala

Method

Dry roasts the nuts separately.

In a small pan heat some ghee and add the nuts

Spice it with chilly powder, salt and chat masala and lime juice just before serving.

Shakarpara

SHAKARPARA

This traditional recipe can be made healthy by using wheat flour instead of maida. You can also use a variety of colours to make the dish vibrant and apt for Holi.

Ingredients

500 grams wheat flour

100 gms ghee

A pinch of baking powder, sugar and edible colour

For the syrup

100 ml water
200 gms sugar

Method

Knead the wheat flour by adding ghee, baking powder some edible colour.

The dough needs to be stiff or else the shakarpara will not be crispy.

Roll the dough to make roti and cut diamond shape pieces but using a knife to make horizontal and vertical lines.

Deep fry the lines and drain them on a tissue paper.

To make the syrup

In a pan boil the water and sugar till it reaches a one string consistency.

While serving, put the crisp colourful pieces in the sugar syrup and serve immediately.

OATS BHEL

Ingredients

1 cup puffed wheat (churmure)
½ cup oats
1 cup onion finely chopped
1 tomato finely chopped
1 small cucumber finely chopped
1 small boiled potato finely chopped
1 tsp coriander chutney
1 tbsp dates and tamarind chutney
1 small green chilly finely chopped
½ tsp lemon juice
Salt to taste

Method

Empty the vegetables and chopped green chilly in a large bowl

Garnish with coriander leaves, chutneys, salt and lemon juice.

Just before serving, add puffed wheat and oats.

Toss well to mix the ingredients and serve in individual bowls.

CHEESE CORN RICE PATTICE

Ingredients

2 cups of cooked rice
1 cup corn kernels
1 cup grated parmesan cheese
½ cup cottage cheese or paneer
1 chopped onion
2 green chillies
½ inch grated ginger,
1 cup corn flour
1 cup bread crumbs
Salt, pepper and chat masala to taste.

Method

Mix rice, corn, parmesan cheese, cottage cheese, onion, chilies, ginger, garlic, salt and herbs together to form a soft dough.

The starch in rice should suffice as the binding agent.

Make flat pattice from the dough and refrigerate for an hour.

Prepare a thin dip with corn flour, water and a little salt.

Dip each ball into it and then roll the cheese corn ball in bread crumbs, if need be.

Shallow fry the pattice till brown.

While serving, reheat them in the microwave, garnish with coriander leaves, grated cheese and serve hot with ketchup.

Lemonade with mint

Drinks for Holi

Bhang can be replaced with these easy-to-make tasty drinks, which are also apt for the season.

LEMONADE WITH MINT

Ingredients

Lime juice, sugar, salt and springs of pudina or mint.

Method

A refreshing drink ideal for the summer season, this one tastes best with fresh lemon extract but you can also use readymade lime juice.

Add water, sugar and salt to taste.

Add sprigs of pudina and serve chilled.

Yogurt with fruit

FRUIT LASSI or YOGURT WITH FRUIT

Ideal for summers, a refreshing lassi or yoghurt is a good dish to have before saying a final good bye to friends.

For the lassi

Blend the curd in blender, with some salt and sugar.

Add the fruit of your choice (strawberry, mango tastes best, avoid citrus fruits) before the final whisk and serve chilled.

For the fruity yogurt

Cut slices of fruits like strawberry, banana or mango and top it with whisked curd with sugar and salt.

You may also add some nuts in the yoghurt. Tastes yum.

Ingredients

120ml pineapple juice
120ml orange juice
40ml strawberry
Two scoops vanilla ice cream

Method

Add three cubes of ice into a glass pour all mixes into a blender.

Blend it and pour it on a bed of strawberry crush and ice.

Garnish with fresh strawberry and serve in a Pilsner glass.
