Is your sex life suffering as your relationship matures? Here's how to reignite the passion.

It is quite natural for your sex life to fizzle out beyond a point as your relationship progresses. Reaching a saturation point is inevitable, and you and your partner may have a hard time dealing with this period.

What you need to know, though, is that this is something that all couples face -- and all you need to do is take the right steps and get over it!

The best way to make your sex life fun again is to analyse your situation. Look for disorders or problems that are causing a decline in either your libido or your partner's. If you find any such problems, eliminate them. This is the first step towards making your times in bed fun again.

In the following pages, we bring you a few possible causes for a sexual decline and how to fix them.

Many people believe that the libido is something that will decline over time, as they age. This has been proven wrong by a study conducted at Duke University in North Carolina, US. The libidos of men between the ages of 40 to 70 were analysed and it was noted that few men (around one third, roughly) experienced a decline in their libido during this time.

Other respondents involved in the study reported signs of increased libido, so all you need to do is look at the brighter side of things.

Put your pills away

Pills cause more harm than good, so it's better to stay off those that can affect your libido. Some of the common drugs that can bring down your sex drive are:

  • Antidepressants: These drugs are very common, thanks to the constant stress that people face in their personal and professional lives. Think twice before you pop some antidepressants, as serotonin reuptake inhibitors and prozac can bring down your energy in bed.
  • Blood pressure medication: Many commonly used blood pressure drugs (common among the working class) can also cause a drop in the overall sex drive. Beta blockers and propranolol are some of the drugs that you need to stay away from.
  • Oral contraceptives: They may sound appealing when you're desperate to avoid getting pregnant, but these pills may not be good for your health in the long run. Lo/Ovral, Ortho Novum and Norinyl are drugs that contain a key component -- progesterone. Such medication can bring down your sex drive significantly.

There are many illnesses and disorders that can cause problems in your sex life, and these need not necessarily be related to your sexual health directly. Sometimes problems with your sex life can occur rarely, without any secondary cause, but if your issues continue for more than a period of three months, then you need to consult a physician.

Diabetes can contribute to low libido and can result in impotence, and many diabetic men face erectile dysfunction. Low levels of the male hormone testosterone can also reduce a man's muscle tone, reduce the density of body hair and enlarge his breasts.

Mental problems like depression and lack of appetite, low levels of concentration, anxiety, or nervousness can cause impotence and other sexually related problems.

If your thyroid gland is not very active, you'll experience lethargy and an overall fall in your energy levels. Such sluggishness can affect your sex life badly.

Be realistic

Accept reality and understand that life is not quite like it's portrayed in movies and books. It's unfair to expect your sexual life to stay at an all time high throughout the year, because people act depending upon their moods and circumstances. You should give your partner adequate space and know where to draw the line.

Sometimes you may face problems like premature ejaculation, if you're mentally preoccupied or nervous, so it's important that you take all this in your stride without getting bogged down.

Bring in some spice

Role-playing is popular among people who have an active sex life, as this form of sexual encounter can be very enticing and appealing. You can bring to life your wildest fantasies in bed and learn about what your partner likes and prefers to go the extra mile.

Sex toys are catching on too, and these are optional accessories that you can use. Bringing in some variety can push your sex life up the chart, strengthening your relationship in the process.
