We invited readers to share stories of how they met their spouses and interesting anecdotes about their wedding day. Vidya Subramanian shares her love story.

They say matches are made in heaven. I did not believe in the statement until I had a firsthand experience of it.

Ever since I can remember, I have abhorred the concept of arranged marriages even though I had my grandparents, parents and aunt all enjoying matrimonial bliss as a result this tradition. I had announced at a very tender age to my family members that arranged marriage was not for me. They laughed it off saying "...yeah yeah there is plenty of time for that".

Over time I moved to Canada for my Bachelors and that's where I met my to be husband Nikhil who was there for his Masters degree.

What started off as friendship eventually blossomed into love. But there was a catch. Though both of us were South Indians, we belonged to different ethnic groups. Our parents opposed this alliance.

Several unproductive arguments later Nikhil and I decided to part ways after 5 years of courtship. He returned to India while I continued to remain in Canada. We decided to remain in touch with each other.

In the mean time our parents decided to undergo the laborious task of finding us suitable bride and groom.

After about two years on, a visit to India, Nikhil and I decided to catch up. There was an instant connection. Fortunately we were both still single.

So once again we decided to push this topic with our parents and this time stronger than ever. Several back and forth conversations later, they finally relented and got us married on June 18, 2009.

Marrying Nikhil has been one of the BEST decisions in my life. I guess matches are indeed made in heaven.
