Horsehead Nebula

Image: Horsehead Nebula.
Photographs: Madhup Rathi

A picture that's out of this world. Literally.

Here is Madhup Rathi's photograph of the Horsehead Nebula captured using a telescope.

"I am an amateur astronomer," Madhup tells us. "I have taken a long-exposure picture (115 minutes long) of the Horsehead Nebula, Flame Nebula & Alnitak Complex in Orion constellation on Vixen R200SS reflector telescope."

"Horsehead Nebula (the object right-of-center in the picture) is a dark molecular cloud, roughly 1,500 light years distant. It is visible only because its obscuring dust is silhouetted against the brighter red-pink nebula in the background."

"The nebula in the background is ionised by the bright star in the picture, Alnitak."

"Flame Nebula is on the bottom-left of the picture. There again, Alnitak ionises hydrogen into orange coloured gas. This picture is collected over 115 minutes (23 pictures of 5 minutes each)."

"For reference, the head of the horse is about 2 to 3 light years across. The magnification is approximate 38 times."
