PICS: How these star mums named their babies

North West, Apple, Pilot Inspektor… celebrity mothers who thought these names were just fine.

Penelope Cruz recently named her newborn daughter with Javier Bardem, Luna Encinas Cruz. Born last month in Madrid, the baby girl’s name was leaked to the world when dad Bardem went to register the baby, reports said.

Luna, probably one of the least outlandish of all the names in this list, means moon in Spanish and Encinas is Bardem's paternal surname which means 'live oak'. In the pages to follow we bring you a concise list of celeb mums and their unusually named children.

The thing about being Beyonce is that you can name your baby w-h-a-t-e-v-e-r you want. So when she had one with Jay Z, she thought Blue Ivy isn't such a bad name after all. Now, it isn’t entirely odd, you see.

Apparently both Beyonce and Jay-Z have a connection to the number 4. Turns out she was born on September 4 and he on December 4. They got married on April 4 (4/4) and since baby Ivy popped out just three days off the lucky number mark, on January 7, the celebrity couple decided have the number in the name. Ivy is a play on words -- it stands for IV, the Roman numeral for the number 4.

Victoria Beckham

Continuing with numbers, we have Victoria Beckham who named her daughter Harper Seven, in part because her soccer star husband David Beckham wore a t-shirt with the number for the longest time in his career and mostly because they, like about a billion other people, consider it lucky. The first name, Harper comes from her favourite author -- Harper Lee.

Natalie Portman

Here's another one. Natalie Portman has named her son with Benjamin Millepied as Aleph, which is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet and represents the number one.

Gweneth Paltrow

You knew Gweneth Paltrow wasn't going to be your everyday mother when she decided to name her daughter Apple. She explained on Oprah that 'it sounded so sweet and it conjured such a lovely picture for me -- you know, apples are so sweet and they're wholesome and it's biblical'. So it wasn't entirely surprising that she turned to the holy book again when her son was born… and named him Moses. Which is good, we suppose, as long as you don’t expect him to part the seas.

Kim Kardashian

When Kim Kardashian decided to have a baby with her boyfriend, the rapper Kanye West, the couple thought it would be a nice thing to name her North West. Makes it so much easier to find her when you lose her in the mall, right? Whip out the compass app on your phone and look for her.

Beth Riesgraf

The Leverage star Beth Riesgraf and her husband, Jason Lee apparently sought inspiration from a song by indie rockers, Grandaddy, titled "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot" and named their son Pilot Inspektor Riesgraf-Lee. Why Inspektor and its odd spelling? We really don't want to know. 

Alicia Silverstone

Clueless star Alicia Silverstone was just that about naming her baby boy when her husband Christopher Jarecki offered her two options: Bear and Blu. And apparently, since she liked both, they went with Bear Blu. Why it wasn't Blu Bear is a mystery that remains unsolved to this day.

Katie Holmes

After Katie Holmes delivered the blue-eyed Suri, the couple -- she and her then husband Tom Cruise -- shared the news with the world through a statement, announcing also the origins of her name. Suri, they said, was Hebrew for 'princess' and Persian for 'red rose'.

What the couple didn’t say (and probably didn’t know) is that the name apparently meant 'pickpocket' in Japanese and 'horse mackerels' in Italian… and not to mention 'knife' in our very own Marathi.

Nicole Richie

We could go on but to wrap up the list, we have Nicole Richie and Joel Madden's son Sparrow who was named after Captain Jack Sparrow and largely because she liked 'the way it sounded with (their daughter's name) Harlow'. Ah well.
