PIX: Why Beckham, Abraham are both 'triangles'!

Men have a body-type too -- and should dress accordingly!

A female body is classified mainly into four body shapes -- banana, pear, apple and hourglass.

Now, scientists have turned to geometric shapes to describe males as either triangle, rectangle, oval or linear.

"Women have for many years been categorised by shape but nothing similar had been applied to men. Four distinct shapes kept reoccurring in the survey," the Daily Express quoted nutritionist Linda O'Byrne, who helped to compile the research linked to dieting, as saying.

So guys, listen up! If you are a triangle, with broad shoulders and a tapered waist like footballer David Beckham, 36, or John Abraham, 38, your figure will hold no fears.

Indeed, you may find yourself hogging the mirror for rather too long!

Style tip: The triangle is the ideal body shape for men, so pretty much any garment is sure to flatter you. However, if your lower body doesn't balance up to your broad shoulders, you need to balance it out with pants that are either wide or straight-cut. And don't opt for loose tees or shirts -- they should fit well.

The rectangle

On the other hand, most men fall into the chunkier rectangular category, like Britain's Got Talent judge Michael McIntyre, 35 and Abhishek Bachchan, also 35.

Such individuals' chest, waist and hips are more or less the same width and their torso has less definition, ie it's straight. Beware of creeping weight gain, say the experts.

Style tip: Here, the illusion of a triangle shape is the aim, so you need to emphasise your shoulders using maybe well-cut jackets or not-too-snug tees and shirts. Any style that broadens your shoulders will give the illusion that your waist is tapering.

The oval

Oval-shaped men, like apple-shaped women, carry their weight around the mid-section. Think roly-poly comic Johnny Vegas, 39 and singer Bappi Lahiri, 58 -- they look large overall and have a large stomach.

Style tip: An oval-shaped man needs to take the focus away from his mid-section, so relaxed-fit pants are the key. And don't tuck in your tees or shirts as they will emphasise your fat.

Linear Man

Linear Man, as epitomised by beanpole comedy writer Stephen Merchant, 36, and TV host Gaurav Kapoor, 27, is thin with narrow shoulders, waist and hips.

Style tip: For this body type, horizontal stripes and textured fabrics are a saving grace, as they add the illusion of a little bulk. Fits are important too -- very tight and they will make you look too thin, very loose and they'll emphasise your lack of build.
