When a fashion magazine throws a party, you can bet the celebrity guests will turn up decked to the nines.

So while attending the Harper's Bazaar bash in Mumbai on December 5, several actresses, models and socialites tried to put their best sartorial foot forward.

Did they succeed or did they fail? You be the judge, as we bring you the who's who right off the red carpet.

We start off with Kangna Ranaut, who was guest of honour, given that she's the magazine's latest covergirl and was present to unveil the latest issue.

With her hair slicked back in a tight ponytail, the actress posed up a storm in this blue backless cocktail and black pumps.

German-Indian model and actress Evelyn Sharma shimmered in a blingy tulip-hem dress.

Socialite Nisha JamVwal showed up in a daring red gown with ethnic overtones and a slit up the front. We only hope those aren't cycling-shorts peeking through!

Tena Desae looked a pretty picture in her one-sided white mini, adding a dash of colour with orange peep-toes.

Proving her supermodel chops, Carol Gracias struck a pose in edgy open-toe boots, leather leggings and a black blouson.

Poorna Jagannathan opted for a sophisticated ensemble comprising a flashy gold skirt and peplum blouse.

In a soft, draping grey and contrasting blue suede pumps, Hazel Keech looked like a million dollars.

Fashion designer Anita Dongre was all smiles as she stepped out in a fuschia tunic and nude heels.

She tried to go for classic retro glam, but all Sarah-Jane Dias managed to do was look 10 years older in this garish gold dress and her librarian hairdo.

Her black halter was appealing, but Suchitra Pillai should probably have opted for slightly better-fitting innerwear; the flash of the cameras revealed a rather unflattering fit.

Model Vasuki Sunkavalli attended the Harper's bash in this rather unappealing sheen-tinted cocktail -- and the curls on top of her head could have done with a little grooming too.

We're undecided as to whether Simone Singh's drop-crotch pants and shirt were chic or frumpy. Could it be possible they were a little bit of both?

Socialite Shaheen Abbas carried off her LBD and accessories perfectly; unfortunately, designer Masaba Gupta didn't. Her dress looked like it needed ironing and the bright pink lipstick she donned did her no favours whatsoever.

Model and actress Debi Dutta slipped into a slinky lace cocktail that flattered her curves.

Mother-daughter designer duo Neeta and Nishka Lulla were colour-coordinated, but with two very different looks. Nishka's sheer-panelled dress was very on-trend and Neeta looked the part of the veteran couturier she is.

On the other hand, designer Babita Malkani donned a vibrant citrus jumpsuit and high heels for the occasion.

And finally, we come to socialite Arti Surendranath, who looks like she needs a stylist. Heaven knows what she was thinking with this complete misfit of a mix and match. Olive jeggings and a black lace top, not to mention those ugly spiked blue shoes!
