College fashion: Be on-trend without exposing!

Last updated on: August 11, 2011 12:28 IST

Here's how you can follow the campus dresscode and still make a style statement!

Colleges across the country have just re-opened post the summer vacation and teenagers are all ready to show off their wardrobes on campus.

Of course, there is a dresscode to follow and that can put a dampener on your plans -- minis, shorts and sleeveless garments are a strict no-no.

But you can still follow some of the latest fads without breaking the rules. We bring you some on-trend tips to look your best this year!

Jump into jeggings

They're definitely one of the hottest must-haves of 2011 -- a cross between jeans and leggings, denim 'jeggings' are being sported by every fashionista worth her salt and that includes Hollywood and B-Town royalty.

So girls, make sure to purchase a pair and team it with a loose-fitting tunic top or long tee. Remember, you don't want to be told off by the faculty for wearing much-too-tight clothing that gives everyone an eyefull!

Cardigans are fun and feminine

The cardy is demure and chic. If you need any validation, just look up pictures of style icons like Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy -- if first ladies everywhere swear by it, it's good to go!

Plus, you can carry a cardigan to slip into on campus if you happen to have plans post-college and are wearing a low-necked or sleeveless outfit.

Jacket up

The year 2011 is all about androgyny -- masculine cuts for women. So if you think you can carry off the look, go for it with a spiffy jacket. And be sure to choose a nice colour that stands out instead of boring black!

Blousons for relaxed fits

Last updated on: August 11, 2011 12:28 IST

Nobody appreciates tightie-wightie clothing in an institution of learning and at the same time, you want to stand out and look stylish.

Your answer is blousons -- loose tees or tops with fitted waistbands. These are also hugely popular at the moment and you can find them everywhere, from streetside stalls to designer stores.

Ravishing in red pants

Go couture-cool in straight-cut red pants -- or even better, spring for a pair of red jeans. They're all the rage this season.

Classic casual: The kurta

So you're into comfort fashion? A free-flowing kurta with an attractive print is the ideal pull-it-on, good-to-go garment. And you can team it with anything, from churidaar pants or leggings to harems.

Checkered charm

Checkered shirts are another big hit this year. You can choose between a fitted cut or then a long, loose one that can be belted up nicely. For the latter look, just borrow one from your boyfriend!

Maxi it out

Summery and boho, maxi dresses are the perfect campus wear. Of course, if your college objects to sleeveless outfits, just keep a cardigan or light jacket handy!

Waistcoats in verve

Go for preppy but pretty in a waistcoat like you see here, or then get a denim one that will go well with tees.

Statement accessories

Accessories are a teenager's best friend -- at least till diamonds take over! Go for chunky neckpieces, bracelets and belts like these. Anything unique will make an impression.

Glasses can be great

Glasses don't mean geek. If you have a number, make the most of it by rocking a colourful, retro pair of frames. You're sure to turn a few heads!

Heavyduty handbags

And finally, you need a handbag that can accomodate all your books, notes and other college paraphernalia. Big is beautiful, so a nice neutral tote should do the trick.

If you prefer the more sophisticated route, pick out a satchel. But make sure it has a long strap too, so you can carry it like a messenger bag, else you'll have to lug it around on your wrist all day!

Happy shopping!
