Top 10 DSLR cameras in India

From Rs 26,000 to Rs 4.4 lakh, these are the best DSLR currently available in the Indian market.

Deciding on an effective DSLR is difficult and the market is replete with choices, from expensive to cost-effective. While there have been many companies trying to lay claim to the throne, only two have really stuck out this year: Canon and Nikon. Whatever your requirements may be, both these Japanese companies have something that will fit your budget well.

We take a look at the top 10 DLSR cameras currently available in the Indian market. Keep in mind that we only look at the bodies for the devices -- purchasing a camera with a lens set will cost you more. Read on to find out what our top picks are.

We start out with the most expensive of the cameras out there -- the Canon 1DX

It weighs in at 1340 grams and features a 36x24 mm CMOS sensor with an optical resolution of 18.1 megapixels.

Despite this, it's capable of a maximum image resolution of 5184x3456 with full HD video recording. It also has a monstrous 61 points auto focus system, which features 41 cross-type points and has a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second and minimum shutter speed of 30 seconds.

The effective ISO range is from ISO 100-51200 in auto mode with a maximum sensitivity of ISO 204800. It is also capable of capturing 14 frames per second in continuous shooting mode. If you can afford it, the Canon 1DX is second to none.

Nikon D5200

The D5200 represents a more affordable SLR package which still tries to pack in many premium features including a 23.5x15.6 mm CMOS sensor with an optical resolution of 24.1 megapixels, a 39 point auto focus system and an Expeed 3 image processor.

It has an effective ISO range of 200-6400, can take still images with a maximum resolution of 6016x4000 and is capable of full HD video at 30 frames per second.

If that weren’t enough, the device has a viewfinder that can be oriented at up to 170 degrees thus allowing for more creative or difficult shots. With a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000th of a second and a minimum shutter speed of 30 seconds, it’s great for fast shots at high ISO settings.

Canon EOS 700D

Despite being fairly old, there’s still a lot to like about the Canon EOS 700D.

It has a 22.3x14.9 mm CMOS sensor with an optical resolution of 18 megapixels. It’s not too heavy, at just 525 grams, and can capture images at a maximum resolution of 5184x3456 with support for full HD recording.

Maximum shutter speed is 1/4000th of a second and minimum shutter is 30 seconds.

The effective ISO range is 100-6400 at auto settings, but you can manually adjust it to go as high as 12800. Worth a look if you want a mid-range SLR with a good range of features.

Nikon D4

Remember how we called the Canon EOS 5D Mark-III the most expensive SLR yet? The Nikon D4 takes that crown easily.

It features a 16.2 megapixel, 36x23.9 mm CMOS sensor which is capable of images at a maximum resolution of 4928x3280 and full HD video recording. It is capable of a range of ISO settings, including ISO 50 and ISO 204 besides the effective range of 200-12800.

It has a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second and a minimum shutter speed of 30 seconds. It comes in fairly heavy at 1180 grams but  has a range of specialist features for professionals.

It’s also perhaps the only SLR capable of 1-10 frames per second of continuous shooting in low speed mode, with continuous high speed allowing up to 11 frames per second.

Canon EOS 6D

The Canon EOS 6D has a range of amazing features including silent shooting, an 11-point auto focus system, built-in Wi-Fi and GPS and much more.

It has a 35.8x23.9 mm CMOS sensor with an optical resolution of 20.2 megapixels. This allows it to capture images at a maximum resolution of 5472x3648 and can also handle full HD video recording at 24 to 30 frames per second depending on your requirement.

It has a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000th of a second and a minimum shutter speed of 30 seconds. 

ISO ranges from 100-25600 but it’s possible to expand this to as high as 102400.

The DIGIC 5+ image processor helps seal the deal when it comes to rapid picture taking and low-light photography.

The Nikon D7100 features a 23.5x15.6 mm CMOS sensor with an optical resolution of 24.1 megapixels and is capable of full HD recording along with a maximum image resolution of 6000x4000.

The ability to shift the display at up to 170 degrees makes it easier to capture images in difficult spots.

The Canon EOS 7D is a monster of an SLR, weighing in at 820 grams but is both dust and water resistant, thus being all the more useful for outdoor shoots.

It does come with a 22.3x14.9 mm CMOS sensor which has an optical resolution of 18 megapixels. This makes it capable of capturing images at a maximum resolution of 5184x3456 while also capturing full HD video.

Another high range SLR camera, the Nikon D800E features a powerful 35.9x24 mm CMOS sensor with an optical resolution of 36.3 megapixels.

It is capable of shots at a maximum resolution of 7360x4912 with support for full HD recording. Though  it is capable of ISO 100-6400, it can go as high as Hi-2 (ISO 25600).

Maximum shutter speed is 1/8000th of a second with a minimum shutter speed of 30 seconds.

For its weight (900 grams for the body alone), it is pretty hefty but delivers excellent performance throughout.

Perhaps the most definitive DSLR that money can buy, the Canon EOS 5D Mark-III features a 36x24 mm CMOS sensor with an optical resolution of 22.3 megapixels. It is has TTL phase detection auto focus and a focal length of 24-105 mm.

It can take still images with a maximum resolution of 5760x3840 and is also capable of full HD recording.

A maximum shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second and minimum shutter speed of 30 seconds, combined with Dust Reduction which wards off dust from the sensor and a DIGIC 5 image processor makes Canon EOS 5D Mark-III the go-to device for shooting film-level videos and stills.
