Mac... the mere spell of the name causes sensation among the tech-lovers. Apple's unique way to say hi to the personal computer world is known as Mac and no one would ever have a second thought on rating the products masterminded by Steve Jobs.

Mac undoubtedly gets an inclined liking, thanks to its exclusive features, elegant and mesmerising looks and that special oomph factor. And today, Apple Mac is undeniably way ahead of many contemporary desktop, laptops and netbooks.

But was it always like that?

A brief history

It feels amazing to find that Macintosh 128K machine was the original Apple Macintosh personal computer that was launched on January 24, 1984. However, it was discontinued after a little more than a year on October 1, 1985.

Next in the long line came the Macintosh 512K PC which was actually the first update to the original Macintosh 128K.

Macintosh Plus was the third in the Macintosh line that hit stores after its release on January 16, 1986. It was soon followed by updates like Macintosh SE and Macintosh II on March 2, 1987. Mac Classic and Mac LC were the next to follow in 1990.

Next lined up were the portable Macs, which kicked off with the unsuccessful attempt called Macintosh Portable in 1989 and again in 1990. However, the concept was carried forward with PowerBook that was designed, manufactured and sold by Apple Computer, Inc. from 1991 to 2006.

In 1999, the low-end iBook range supplemented the line. The PowerBook and iBook lines were discontinued and replaced by the MacBook Pro and MacBook families respectively by 2006.

Today we are left with options like MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Mini and Mac Pro, a full lined-up range to pick the right one according to our choice and requirements. And trust us, it's actually damn tough to pick the "best" one!

However, it's not so difficult to decide whether to choose a Mac or Windows PC, when the pocket pinch is not a concern!

The never-ending debate

The topic for debate is Mac Vs Windows PC. And subjective ranting mainly triggers the debate. Actually the products shouldn't be compared at all. Because the platforms and components are way different. And hence there is actually no point comparing fundamental characteristics like performance and basic exteriors.

Still, since we have finally started it, we must say that ignoring the platforms and price, Mac is definitely an inspiration to many of the contemporary PCs. As every Apple product, which is the inspiration to many other companies which often come up with similar products, the scenario is all the same for Mac products too.

It is a fact that more and more PC vendors are "copying" Apple's style and features so that they can stay in competition and limelight. And as a result, things are getting more and more similar and the comparison level is getting narrower.
