IIT-Guwahati is the only Indian institute to have made it to the Times Higher Education's Top 100 list of universities that have completed less than 50 years.

The Times Higher Education (THE) along with Thomson Reuters recently unveiled the list of 100 best universities from across the globe.

Titled 100 Under 50 2014, the THE rankings comprises a list of the top 100 universities under 50 years old ranked on a scale of 100.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati is the only Indian university to have qualified to the world rankings this year.

The IIT-Guwahati is ranked 87th in the world rankings and shares the position with Portugal's New University of Lisbon and Australia's University of Western Sydney.

The universities were judged under 13 indicators (includes 2 subjective and 11 objective indicators) that were also used to arrive at the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. However, the 100 Under 50 2014 methodology has been carefully customised to reflect the special characteristics of younger universities by giving less weightage to subjective indicators of academic reputation.

The 11 objective performance indicators were grouped under five main categories and were scored thus:

  • Teaching: the learning environment (worth 30 per cent of the overall ranking score)
  • Research: volume, income and reputation (worth 30 per cent)
  • Citations: research influence (worth 30 per cent)
  • Industry income: innovation (worth 2.5 per cent)
  • International outlook: staff, students and research (worth 7.5 per cent).

A few universities were not considered for the rankings because of the following reasons --  they did teach undergraduates; they taught only a single narrow subject; or their research output amounted to fewer than 1,000 articles between 2007 and 2011 (200 a year).

In some exceptional cases, the THE website mentions that it did include universities below the 200-paper threshold provided they had "a particular focus on disciplines with generally low publication volumes, such as engineering or the arts and humanities."
