In a first, a third year Economics student from Jaipur has been offered the role of an analyst in a leading financial institution with an annual salary of US $70,000.

Narayani Gupta, a third year student of Economics and Mathematics at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, has landed herself a job with Merrill Lynch, America, on an annual salary of US $70,000 (around Rs 45 lakh) as soon as she graduates.

Such large starting salaries are usually reserved for engineering and management students, but Narayani is neither.

The 20-year-old student from Jaipur has one year of study left and after her internship she will join one of the world’s largest financial institutions as an analyst.

She will work out of the company's headquarters at Times Square.

Narayani Gupta has had a distinguished academic career throughout. Her parents, Madhukar and Kiran Soni Gupta are senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers, both posted in Jaipur.

After getting the fourth highest marks in Rajasthan in the plus-two exam, she was ranked 22nd in the All India CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) and made it to the prestigious National Law University in Bangalore.

An offer from Wellesley College in Massachusetts was too good to miss, so she took that up instead and is now studying Economics, Mathematics and Mandarin at Wellesley.

Painting and photography are her other interests. She participated regularly in school art competitions and a group show organised by the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society in Delhi in 2004.

While studying in Class VII at Cambridge School, Gupta participated in an arts competition organised by Harvard University where her painting on the theme of 'sustainability' won first position in the children’s section.

Gupta's mother, Kiran Soni, principal secretary in the art and culture department, told Rediff.com, "She was always a very bright student so we had confidence that she will do well in life. We hope wherever she will work, she will serve well."
