India's top 10 b-schools of 2011; IIM-A loses top spot

The annual results of Business Today and Outlook's respective best b-schools of India for 2011-12 are out. As per Business Today's survey for overall performance, IIM-Bangalore outpaced IIM-Ahmedabad's number one ranking after a record 10 years. Read on to know BT's top 10 business schools of India.

The survey conducted by Business Today magazine along with AC Nielsen revealed a surprising wave of change in the top ranking business schools this year.

India's leading b-school so far, IIM-Ahmedabad lost its number one ranking to IIM-Bangalore. This year's results saw the addition of institutions like IIM-Kozhikode, IIFT-Delhi and IIM-Shillong to the top 10 list.

The respondents were spread across five groups of stakeholders of the survey, which included MBA aspirants, current MBA students, young executives, recruiters (human resource heads and functional heads), and permanent faculty of B-schools who were asked to share their responses across various parameters of judgement.

1. IIM-Bangalore

On top position is IIM-Bangalore.

Established in 1973, IIM-Bangalore is known for its research facilities guided by an excellent team of faculty members and department heads.

It is also known to house a well equipped library replete with books on management and research in all respects.

Noted Indian scientist K.Radhakrishnan was a student of IIM-Bangalore where he pursued Masters in Management.

Raju Hirani's popular Hindi film '3 Idiots' was shot at the IIM-B campus.

2. IIM-Calcutta

Moving up one position from last year is IIM-Calcutta which occupies the second slot this year.

It was established in 1961 as the first Indian Institute of Management in the country.

An institute par excellence, IIM-C is known for its extensive facilities and activities in the field of research and consultancy. They also organise a lot of seminars, academic conferences along with research publications.

As per a recently released report, IIM-Calcutta has already received close to 45 pre-placement offers, and 17 pre-placement interview offers for its 2012 batch of students.

  • Tuition fee: Rs 4,11,000 for PGP-I and Rs 4,41,000 for PGP-II
  • Room & boarding: Rs 24,000 as hostel fee and Rs 18,000 for food charges each year
  • Class size: 362 (2010-12)
  • Entrance test: CAT, followed by group discussions & personal interview for domestic candidates; GMAT for overseas candidates

3. IIM-Ahmedabad

In a surprising revelation of sorts, India's consistently leading institute Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad slips down two positions to occupy the third spot.

Established in 1961, the institute is synonymous to providing the best of faculty members in the field of management in the country.

The 100-acre campus enrolls about 800 full time students and 1500 executives across 300 courses.

Among its notable alumni includes best selling Indian author Chetan Bhagat.

  • Tuition fee: Rs. 13,70,000 (excluding food charges) for two-year residential PG programme (2010-12)
  • Room & boarding: Rs 27,000 (hostel and electricity charges) per year.
  • Class size: 380

4. IIM-Indore

On fourth position is Indian Institute of Management-Indore.

Established in 1998, it has the largest campus in the country among all the IIMs-- an area of 193 acres.

The institute's strategic location -- its proximity to the fastest growing industrial belt in central India and Special Economic Zones around Indore-- esnure that its students get hands-on experience about the development of an industrial sector from its patrons.

The institute believes in imparting experimental education to its students.

  • Tuition fee: Rs 10,95,000 for two years (for Indians), and $61,950 for two years for international students

5. IIM-Lucknow

Staying put on fifth place is Indian Institute of Management-Lucknow.

It was established in the year 1984.

It has a 185-acre campus and enrolls over 700 students in a year in its various post graduate programmes.

It is closely linked with industry bigwigs which makes it an excellent learning platform for management development learners.

  • Tuition fee: Rs 4,05,000 for two years inclusive of hostel & others rent
  • Room & boarding: Rs 84,000 (two years)
  • Class size: 389 for PG programme-I (2010-12); 340 for PG programme-II
  • Entrance test: CAT
  • Application fees: Rs 1,400 for General candidates; Rs 700 for SC/ST candidates

6. IIM-Kozhikode

On sixth place is Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode.

Established in the year 1996, it moved to its current campus in Kunnamangalam in 2003.

IIM Kozhikode holds the credit for being the first Asian institute to offer a distance learning programme in management for working executives. The programme is called Interactive Distance Learning.

It currently has an enrolment of about 650 graduate students and 15 doctoral students.

7. IIFT-Delhi

On seventh position is Indian Institute of Foreign Trade-Delhi.

It was started in 1963 by the Government of India to professionalise the study of foreign trade management and its various facets and thereby facilitate better trade relations with neighbouring nations.

With close to 85,000 students taking the IIFT entrance exam last year to fill up 220 seats, it is one of the most challenging b-schools in the country.

8. ISB-Hyderabad

Slipping down one position from last year is Indian School of Business-Hyderabad.

It was founded in the year 1996 by Rajat Gupta and Anil Kumar, both of whom have resigned their positions from the board following their involvement in the Galleon insider trading scam.

ISB-Hyderabad is associated with leading international business schools including London Business School, MIT Sloan and Fletcher School.

9. IIM-Shillong

On ninth position is Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIMS).

Established in 2007, it is also known as the Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (RGIIM).

It was the first IIM to be established in the north eastern part of India.

Currently it has close to 160 postgraduate students under its roll.

10. XLRI-Jamshedpur

Slipping down four positions from last year is XLRI Jamshedpur at number ten.

Established in 1949, XLRI is one of the oldest business schools in India. It currently has an enrolment of 360 students and has a faculty strength of about 70 members.

XLRI is known for its courses in Human Resource management and Business Management.

It was also ranked number two according to the Economic Times 2011 survey.

XLRI alumni hold leading positions in the country's consulting firms.
