In the latest rankings for the world's best masters in management programme released by Financial Times, the country’s premier management institute has slipped eight places down and is ranked at Number 18.

With the global competition rising in the Financial Times (FT) Masters in Management Rankings 2013, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) fell eight places to 18th rank this year.

As against this, last year the institute was ranked at 10th place.

The FT report ranks top 70 programmes in general management that do not require students to have prior work experience for admission to the masters programme (pre-experience Masters Degrees).

The rankings give weightage to weighted salary in US$, value for money, careers, placement success, international students and faculty, women students and faculty, course fee and length, among others.

In January this year, the Indian School of Business (ISB) and Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) had fared poorly in the FT Global MBA rankings for 2013. Read all about it here!

Apart from the IIM-A, at 19th spot this year, the rankings also saw debut of IIM Calcutta (IIM-C), the only second IIM and Indian b-school to be ranked in the list of 70 global b-schools.

Under FT Masters in Management 2013 Rankings, the IIM-A and IIM-C have been ranked for their flagship post graduate programme in management (PGP).

What's more, in its debut ranking, IIM-C was ranked first subject-wise for finance.

The IIM-A and IIM-C have been ranked above renowned universities of the world such as London School of Economics and Political Science, Copenhagen Business School, Manchester Business School and others.

"In its endeavour to become a global institution, and as a step towards achieving its vision of becoming an 'International Centre of Excellence in Management Education', IIM-C is poised to attain accreditation from what is considered to be the most prestigious global agency 'The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)'.

The IIM-C has joined CEMS, an elite club of 28 premier business schools from across the world, as an academic partner.

It is the only Indian member of this renowned alliance of leading global business schools and multinational corporations," IIM-C stated in an official communique.

On the other hand, talking about the fall in rankings, a senior faculty member at IIM-A stated, "Competition is getting hotter among global B-schools in the rankings. Also, we get poorly ranked as far as international faculty, international students, share of international members on board and share of female students are concerned.  This has impacted our rankings on FT Masters in Management 2013."

Having debuted at eighth rank in 2010, IIM-A was ranked at 7 and 10 in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
