First Salary: 'I bought a watch worth Rs 650'
Yesterday, we asked you readers to tell us about your first salary and how you spent it. Here's the first set of responses we received.
I'm Sankara Narayanan, living in Chennai and working as a regional service manager at Moserbaer India Limited.
Your subject line has taken me back to my old memories. I got my first salary while pursuing my apprenticeship in Chennai Port trust in September of 1994 and I was paid Rs 650.
I took this money proudly and gave to my mother, who asked me to give it to my father. My father asked me to buy something for myself with the money and told me to work hard so that I earn at least Rs 1000 a month.
With my first salary, I went out to buy something with a condition that I will not spend a rupee more or less than my salary.
I bought a dual display watch ( Digital with Analog display ) for Rs 650.
From that day onwards every year I try and achieve my father's target which he appreciates, when I achieve, before setting another target for me.
This motivation has helped me work hard and achieve my targets.
From 1994 to till date, I must have bought so many watches and also received few of them costing between Rs 3,000 to Rs 5000 as gifts. But the satisfaction I had from buying the watch from my first salary is comparable to none.
