The Yamaha R25 is the most awaited motorcycle of 2014 and lives up to the hype, says Faisal Ali Khan of MotorBeam.com

The most awaited motorcycle launch of 2014 has happened in Indonesia, with Yamaha having put on sale the R25 quarter-litre bike, priced at Rs 2.7 lakh in Indonesia (converted as per today's exchange rate). The specifications of this highly awaited Japanese bike have been revealed.

The Yamaha R25 is powered by a 250cc, liquid-cooled, parallel-twin DOHC, 8-valve engine.

This motor produces 36 PS of power at 12,000 RPM and 22.1 Nm of torque at 10,000 RPM.

It's amply clear, the R25 is a high revving machine with peak torque being produced way high in the power band. The gearbox is a 6-speed unit.

The Yamaha R25 measures 2090 in length, 720 mm in width and 1135 mm in height.

It has a wheelbase of 1380 mm, ground clearance of 160 mm and a seat height of 780 mm.

The Yamaha R25 uses a diamond frame and has a fuel tank capacity of 14 litres.

The Yamaha R25 weighs 166 kgs, which might seem heavy as the KTM RC 390 which produces more power, weighs slightly lesser but the R25 is still lighter than its chief rival, the Kawasaki Ninja 300 which tips the scale at 172 kgs.

However the Kwacker produces more output, 39 PS and 27 Nm.

The Yamaha R25 has 110/70/17 front tyre and 140/70/17 rear tyre with 298 mm dual piston floating disc at the front and 220 mm single piston disc at the rear (no mention of ABS).

The front uses 41 mm telescopic forks while the rear is a monocross suspension.

The bike uses LED lights at the rear while the headlights have a 55W output.

Yamaha will manufacture the R25 in Indonesia and will start sales in the same country first, offering first few buyers a chance to own exclusive gear (like a VR46 Helmet).

The Yamaha R25 will face competition from the Hero HX250R, KTM RC 390, Bajaj Pulsar SS400, TVS Apache 250 and Honda's CBR300R.

The performance motorcycle segment has heated up quite a lot but Yamaha is likely to get many customers, most of them being upgraders from the R15.
