ATM woes: 'The money was credited in 24 hours'

We had asked you, dear readers to share your good and bad ATM experiences.

Anita Aikara/Rediff.com recounts two different instances. You can share yours too!

ATM message

A few years ago, my mother was at Corporation Bank ATM in Mumbai.

She was there to withdraw Rs 5,000. The transaction failed.

However, when the transaction slip slipped out of the machine, it said that Rs 5,000 had been withdrawn from her account.

Shocked and in panic, she again tried withdrawing Rs 5,000 from her account, hoping that this time it would work. Yet again, the transaction failed, but the money was debited.

It was way past the banking hours, so she took both the transaction slips and went home.

She was nervous. The transaction slips said Rs 10,000 was withdrawn from her account, but she had not received the money.

The next day she went to the bank and lodged a complaint.

She updated her passbook only to realise that both the transactions were successful and that the money was indeed debited from her account.

Thankfully, the branch manager was very helpful. She immediately asked for the CCTV footage and said that she would look into the matter.

Things weren't that easy though. Over the next few days, she had to make a few more visits to the bank to check the status of the complaint.

Finally, few days later she was told that her account was credited with the money. That was such a relief.

A year ago, I faced a similar situation, but the experience was not that bad.

I was at the Yes Bank ATM at Lower Parel and used my HDFC debit card to withdraw money. The transaction was successful but I didn't receive any money.

My phone alerts too showed that Rs 5,000 was debited from my account.

Thankfully, the bank was just next door so I rushed and lodged a complaint.

I also called HDFC Bank and informed the executive on the other line about the incident.

She heard me out patiently and said that within two working days, the money would reflect in my account. And as luck would have it, the money was back in my account in less than 24 hours.
