How often have you thought of reaching out to the poor and needy and never did a thing about it?

How often have you almost swiped your card on the website of a charity and ducked?

How often have you turned a blind eye to the pain and suffering around you and justified your not donating to your own financial difficulties?

There is perhaps a lesson many of us can learn from Prasava Patil, a six-year-old girl from Belgaum, Karnataka.

Last week Patil was attending a social gathering which Dr Prakash Amte was addressing.

Son of the legendary social worker Late Baba Amte, who rehabilitated thousands of leprosy patients in his lifetime, Dr Prakash Amte is also a Magsaysay Award winner, like his father and his wife Dr Mandakini Amte.

He runs Lok Biradari Prakalp at Hemalkasa in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra to provide community services to tribal people and plans to set up a 50-bedded full-fledged hospital at Hemalkasa.

Dr Amte was in Belgaum attending a function last week when the six-year-old did something that only a few of us could dream of doing.

"At the end of my speech, a small girl walked up to the stage and handed over a piggy bank in which she had collected Rs 2,000," he said.

When Dr Amte asked the girl -- Prasava Patil, she replied that she had collected the amount from the money given by her parents as her pocket money.

It may not have been a terribly large contribution but the piggy bank contained everything she had saved up.

What does it really take to give away all your savings to a cause?

Will you do it too?

What can we do to inculcate the spirit of charity in our children and help them discover the joy of giving?
