Atrayee Bhattacharya shares the story of her marriage:
I belong to Bengali baidik brahmin family and my husband is a pure Tamil Iyer.
We met in VIT University during our Masters in Applied Microbiology.
Profound knowledge and a firm determination to excel in the field of science made the bond of friendship between us.
As the years passed by we both fell in love.
My family, being very orthodox, rejected my wish to marry him tough they liked him as a person.
I must admit that his parents accepted me whole-heartedly right from the beginning.
Being a gold medallist in a subject like microbiology, I was flooded with many marriage proposals.
I managed to escape those by citing my desire to pursue higher studies.
In the course of time, I was diagnosed with cancer and lost vision in my right eye.
Apart from my parents, the only person who stood beside me during this tough time was my husband and his family.
Throughout the months of treatment, he was the strongest support to my parents.
When everyone in my extended family lost hope of me getting married to anyone, my husband and his parents still maintained their wish to get me as the daughter-in-law.
My parents were apprehensive as I was not keeping well. He held my dad's hand and said "I will take care of your daughter come what may."
My dad was still not sure.
One of my uncles told my dad that if a boy can stand with your daughter during this kind of disease; be assured he will definitely take care of her.
After three years we got married. And believe me, everyone in both the families are happy.
People raised doubts on our entirely different food habits.
But you won't believe it feels the best even when you are eating not so good food with best man in the world.
The feeling is mutual when I make dosas and he sings Rabindra Sangeet.
For me love was never blind, never dumb or deaf.
Love has all the senses and that is why it gives you the best in the life.
