Last updated on: April 07, 2014 21:13 IST
One needs to build a good profile before applying for a job online

With too many applicants vying for the same job, what is it that you can do to make the cut?

There is a plethora of jobs in every category today. Yet, there are many who hunt for jobs tirelessly in vain.

Where are they going wrong?

What are they getting stymied?

Why are they not able to bag jobs despite having good skills?

The problem is in between.

There are plenty of jobs and there are plenty of seekers.

The seekers who don't do a good job searching for the right job get stuck and stay unemployed for a long time.

In today's technologically advanced world, simply sending out resumes will not help you enough.

You cannot sit in the comforts of your home and/or visit a couple of job consultancies and expect them to find jobs for you.

You have to create your own persona and brand so that you are hunted instead of being the hunter!

The advent of the Internet has made this a piece of cake for many of us.

Let's unearth five traits of a successful job search so that you pave the right path for yourself.

1. Build your brand online

It is imperative today that you build your brand online and mark your presence.

When someone Googles your name, a number of good links should turn up including the link to your LinkedIn profile, the link to your Twitter profile, and your blog/website that speaks about you as a person and as a professional.

Keep in mind that everything you do online, including your social media platforms, will be weighed.

This is why it is imperative that you create a great image or polish your existing image so that anyone who looks at your profiles and/or blog gets a positive insight.

2. Research thoroughly

Understand the responsibilities and the company profile of the job you're applying to.

There are numerous job seekers who will simply run random searches every now and then, expecting to find the job they desire.

What happens as a result of this is that they end up applying to all the wrong job openings, wasting their time and the company's time.

Keep in mind that your job search should be specific to your field of interest so that your chances of bagging a job automatically increase.

Searching for any job just to be employed will raise your chances of failure and rejection.

This is why experts always advise that you be specific during your job search.

Another thing to remember here is to research the companies you plan on applying to as well.

During the interview the employer will definitely ask a question or two about the company and if you stutter or produce generic answers, you will cast an impression of you being unprofessional.

Use social media to build your contacts and improve your network.

With the Internet, networking is a piece of cake. You have no excuse to stay within confines, thus.

Use Facebook and other platforms to network and spread your contacts.

The referral system is rampant when it comes to job search.

Expand yourself beyond your family and friends, and spread the word about who you are.

If you have relevant contacts you will definitely be referred for more and more relevant job opportunities.

Create a list of companies you'd like to work with and create a customised CV.

Don't wait for jobs to be posted because not many people make job openings public.

The openings that are public obviously attract too many applicants.

Thus, a trick would be to make a list of the companies you'd like to apply to and create a good resume along with a cover letter to forward to these companies.

Please make sure your documents are error-free and extremely professional so that you cast a good first impression and you are considered for further evaluation.

Do not lose hope or distrust your abilities.

It may take time to find the job of your dreams but that doesn't necessarily mean you are not eligible or lack the abilities.

Sometimes it will just take longer than expected.

Don't get disheartened by a few rejections.

Stay confident and you will find a good job if you diligently follow the above steps.

Finding the right job definitely requires positivity, focus, and a strong online presence.

Once you are able to achieve that, your visibility will increase and more employers will reach out to you.
