5 smartphones worth gifting your father

June 19, 2016 11:37 IST

This Father's Day, surprise your father by gifting him a smartphone

Selecting the best gift for Father's Day can be quite a task.

Getting a printed coffee mug, cufflinks or a tie? These are of course the classic solutions, but maybe this time round he has been craving for something different than the usual?

A well thought out gadget may just be the item that he has been holding out on.

Maybe he was too confused or too occupied to let even himself know.

We try to make things easier for you by listing some of the best possible mobile phones one can buy from the tried and tested options available out there in the market.

Lenovo G4 Plus

Lenovo G4 Plus

The series is alive and kicking with the first full HD panel on a Moto G phone.

The 5.5-inch panel has improved by a fair amount, and the camera improvement puts it back into contention again. The finger print addition is another touch (pun intended) which attracts brownie points.

Brilliant near stock Android, Snapdragon 617 SoC with 3 GB RAM, and with a battery backup which just about makes the cut, makes the Lenovo's Moto G4 Plus as a well rounded phone.

Those expecting heavy duty usage of the mobile phones from their dads can look into Redmi Note 3 (SoC 650) while still keeping the budget within the Rs 15,000 range.

Moto X Play (32 GB)

Moto X Play

Here is the phone with one of the better CPU and GPU combination while not taking the spendings overboard if the budget is strictly within Rs 20,000.

The Snapdragon 615 may have taken a backseat with 617 showing up, but along with Adreno 405, 2 GB RAM and an IPS LCD, those looking to get the most graphic intense workout done from their handsets, the Moto X Play still can hold onto its own.

The advantage of FM radio may prove decisive for some, and a 3630 mAh battery on a 5.5-inch screen proves to be up for the task.

A more well rounded option can be the ZUK Z1, but the generation old processor along with non stock OS may be a stumbling block for a few.

One Plus 3

One Plus 3

One Plus is back, and back with a bang too! The new sub Rs 30,000 handset is not only a brilliant option, but is rightly being looked upon as a flagship killer.

The handset packs quite a punch with the latest Snapdragon 820 SoC, and a near overkill of 6 GB RAM.

Add to all this, the Adreno 530 GPU, and it basically translates to not only a smooth journey with the handset, factor in the USB Type C, and there is a fair amount of future proofing on offer as well. The company has taken away the invite system (praise the Lord!), and the OS seems to have come a long way from One Plus's earlier days.

With a crisp 5.5 AMOLED screen, and pretty decent camera, one surely can look forward to weeks, and not days of compliments after gifting this newly released handset.

The price of Rs 27,999 keeps the things from spilling over into the Rs 30,000 price bracket, allowing one to maybe throw in an official case for good measures as well.

LG G4

LG G4

Before you dismiss this handset as last year's flagship, hold onto your horses.

The handset still remains one of the brilliantly crafted mobile phones. A 5.5-inch Quad HD (1440 x 2560p) screen along with a 16 megapixel camera carrying an aperture of f/1.8, laser autofocus, Optical Image stabilisation (3 axis), FM radio, all these are the makings of a handset which may prove just the choice for a person who is backpacking quite frequently.

Snapdragon 808 was never a slouch, and with 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB onboard storage and microSD card support, one still finds the LG G4 to be quite capable even with recent times.

With good clean macro shots, brilliantly executed HDR, support for RAW and the option to grab a leather clad version only makes it easier to flaunt it at social dos.

Those willing to spend above Rs 30,000, the last year's flagship from LG G4 gives them with a solid option here.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

The reigning mobile phone of the year 2016, and still the flagship handset to beat.

Samsung's piece de resistance came at the right time for the company, and the buyers as well.

The stunning handset with its curved display feels feather light when held, and especially the Gold variant looks like the best gadget to have been crafted.

The super AMOLED 5.5-inch screen is as good as it gets, and the Samsung Camera is still the king when one considers the mobile phones with stunning camera prowess.

Loaded with Optical Image Stabilisation, dual pixels and f/1.7 aperture, even the shots taken during night time come out stunning.

The Exynos 8890 Octa Core setup rubs the shoulders with the best in the business.

With a killer battery backup, one cannot go wrong with this handset.

Having trimmed down its Touchwiz interface, Samsung has indeed shown intent.

Those who want to pull back the spending under the Rs 50,000 budget will do well to consider the Samsung Galaxy S7, which comes with near about the same goodness, while only missing out on the curved display.
