At the inaugural ball

January 21, 2009
And here's the gown that took everybody's breath away at the inaugural ball that followed the swearing-in ceremony! Michelle dazzled in a one-shouldered ivory chiffon gown by Taiwan-born American designer Jason Wu.

Says Nil, "Once again she chose a non-mainstream designer. And both outfits are by American designers of non-American origin. It's not about 'white' America anymore."

That's quite a glamorous gown," he continues. "It flatters her fabulous athletic build. She's very sure of herself and is certain about creating her own style statement. I'm sure she has a big team of people working with her to create a specific look and manage her wardrobe, but she knows what she wants -- to be herself, unpredictable."

"In contrast to the colourful clothing she's donned throughout Barack Obama's chaotic campaign, this white hue is now reflective of calm. It looks like she wanted a serene atmosphere, now that everything has come together. It's suited to the occasion -- grand, with a trail at the back and rouching and ruffles on the torso. She's creating an image for herself, not as Mrs Obama, but as Michelle Obama."
