Hogenakal: The waterfall spa

Text and photographs: Pankaj Sinha

Yercaud in Tamil Nadu, sometimes called a poor man's Ooty is about 36 km from Salem district.

We had booked a tour with Tamilnadu Tourism Department Corporation that took care of our travelling, sightseeing, accommodation and meals.

I would recommend a TTDC package tour: it is cheap and the drivers and guides are very friendly. Our three-day tour to Yercaud and Hogenakal was for Rs 1,800 per person.

Our bus departed from Chennai at 10.30 pm on Friday and reached Yercaud at 7 am the following day.

"This is real India," I thought, while going up the narrow and dangerous-looking mountain road. We may have big cities/ metros with good infrastructure, high-rise buildings etc but we have some way to go before we can really call ourselves a developed nation. However, the green green landscape and the pleasant weather soon took my mind away from the road.
