TCS to hire over 32,000
Tata Consultancy Services plans to hire over 32,000 people -- trainees as well as experienced professionals -- in this financial year. S Padmanabhan, executive vice president and head, global HR, TCS (seen in the photograph), talks about the company's recruitment plans.

"TCS recruited 32,462 people during the financial year of 2006-07. In the current fiscal, we will hire at least the same number of people, if not more," he says.

Hiring period: "The hiring of experienced professionals will take place all through the year, while the campus offers to freshers joining us next year will be conducted according to the placement season at colleges."

Positions available: "The hiring will be for both trainees and experienced professionals at the entry and experienced levels," says Padmanabhan. "Experienced professionals will be hired under businesses such as consulting, engineering services and BPOs, and practices such as systems, applications and products (SAP) in data processing, business intelligence and knowledge management."

Qualifications: "The qualifications required depend on the position and role required -- for eg, at the entry level, we recruit engineering graduates and post-graduates in computer science and engineering."

TCS has also formalised the recruitment of science graduates. 'Ignite', an initiative launched last year, involves an intensive seven-month programme aimed at transforming science graduates, who have been chosen after a four-stage selection process, into software professionals.

Experienced professionals with a graduate/ post-graduate degree in engineering may be considered for technical roles, and those with a management post-graduate degree will be considered for business or sales roles. "We may also recruit functional experts for specific practices, for instance the healthcare practice recruits doctors as functional experts, and the financial services practice hires bankers and other finance professionals," says Padmanabhan.
