Sabyasachi's advice for budding designers

Do you aspire to become a world-class fashion designer?

Then be prepared to work without taking a break, initially. And while you're at it, leave your ego at the door.

Of dreams and reality

According to designer Sabyasachi, you must go with your dreams. "At the same time, be a realist because your designs need to sell too," he adds.

"Though the rewards can be tremendous, be prepared for trials and tribulations," he added. He also encouraged designers to let their colthes have a more global appeal.

Inspire and get inspired

People from the industry like Fern Mallis, Vice President-IMG, Fashion, Albert Morris, Browns and Colin McDowel, senior fashion writer, Sunday Times, also offered useful insights (IMG, an event management company organises the fashion week and Browns is a high fashion store in the UK).

According to Fern, value your inner voice. She says it is important to have your own style. At the same time, it does not hurt to be inspired and to do this one needs to be open to what's happening around the world.

"Go to the movies, theatres, read and just be aware of what is happening around you, internalise it and express it through your designs," was her advice.

Last but not the least, aspiring Indian designers must not give up when the going gets tough. Image: Designs by Sisley.
