The Queen of Hill Stations

Many rajas and nawabs summered here, and their palaces still grace the town. The Kapurthala royal family made The Chateau their home, while the Nabha Palace, now a Claridges hotel, belonged to the princes of Nabha in Punjab.

When the British annexed Punjab, 11-year old Dalip Singh was deprived of his throne and the Kohinoor diamond. He was despatched to Mussoorie and, apparently, lived in Castle Hill before he was despatched by the British to the court of Queen Victoria and to a life that ended in tragedy.

Kasmanda Palace (pictured), also a hotel that was once part of the adjoining Christ Church complex, belongs to the Kasmanda royal family in Uttarkhand. Its interiors are decked with tiger skins and stuffed wild animals.
