For as far back as I can remember, two festivals have always been celebrated in my home -- Onam (the harvest festival) and Vishu (our new year).

  • Part II: Spice up the celebration

Onam is traditionally celebrated to welcome the spirit of King Mahabali, who is said to have once ruled over Kerala, and to assure him that his people are happy and wish him well.

No true-blue Malayalee from God's Own Country will celebrate this festival without the traditional pookalam (rangoli made of flowers) and a sumptuous sadya (feast).

The boat race is another unforgettable highlight of this festival.

A lot of emphasis is given to the lunch served on this occasion. But preparing the traditional meal can prove to be quite a herculean task for the city dweller mainly due to lack of time and energy.

Get Ahead brings you simple recipes to spice up your sadhya, this Onam.

Tip: Sadhya tastes best when is served on a fresh plantain leaf.
