Go for comfort and manoeuvrability: Sabyasachi

Sita Menon | April 20, 2005

T

or someone who says he has a small infrastructure, Sabyasachi Mukherjee [Images] is pleased as punch.

The Lakme India [Images] Fashion Week 2004 got him a huge contract from the high end store, Browns, in London [Images].

SabyasachiThis year, he hopes to woo more international buyers.

"No more India for me, in terms of the fact that I have already established my presence here," says Sabyasachi. "I show at premier outlets all over the country. My focus now is international buyers."

Here's Sabyasachi on fashion:

His collection: Quaintly called The Nair Sisters.

Why? My collections have always been inspired by real people. Last year, it was inspired by my sister drinking tea. This year, it is inspired by three sisters who lived in the colony where I grew up. They did not have a mother, only a father.

They would wear most of their father's clothes, especially shirts, and mix and match them with skirts and trousers.

So there were a lot of masculine-feminine nuances.

That's what my collection is all about. It has lots of coordinates and mix-and-match separates.

Think of a French girl who cycles to school. What would she wear? Picture that. And that's what you will see at my show.

You will see: Prints and Peddle-pushers (lots and lots of them).

Why: Because peddle-pushers (also known as Capri pants) fit so comfortably.

You know why peddle-pushers happened, right?

When people rode cycles, the pants kept got getting stuck at the pedals, and that's how they evolved. So that people could manage easily.

The emphasis -- as always -- therefore is on relaxed fit, comfort and manoeuvrability.

Sabyasachi's colour forecast: A lot of vintage, soft colours -- like old rose pink, sepia, orange, emerald, pistachio.

As for my collection, picture looking at any colour through tinted glasses.

You will get a faded, tinted, but beautiful and soft look. That's how my clothes will look.

With an added element: Pure glamour! It's like Maharani Gayatri Devi going to play tennis in Morocco.

What's different: This collection is a breakthrough one for me in many ways.

~ Shine: I have never used shine, ever. But this year, I have gone in for crystals, Swarovski crystal work, sequins

~ Fabrics: You will see a lot of chiffon this year. Again, I have never used chiffon before.

Of course, I have also used muslin, chintz, velvet with baroque beadwork, distressed knits.

~ Prints: I have also used a very difficult technique of hand block printing in my clothes.

Price points: Sabyasachi's separates are available from Rs 3,000 to Rs 18,000.
