Relatives demand probe into Ishmeet's death

July 31, 2008 16:03 IST

Ishmeet Singh

The relatives of Ishmeet [Images] Singh, who died in the Maldives [Images] on Tuesday, have demanded a probe in the circumstances leading to his death.

The cause of death, according to a senior doctor, was a case of drowning. The post-mortem showed that the 19-year-old singer died due to asphyxia.

"We are stressing for a probe into the circumstances leading to Ishmeet's drowning in the swimming pool of the hotel," said Ishmeet's paternal uncle Charan Kamal Singh.

Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Satpal Gosain supported his demand saying it was not clear how Ishmeet died in the swimming pool. Paramjit Singh Khalsa, chief of the Sikh Students Federation, also demanded a probe into the singer's death.

Dr Harvinder Singh, senior medical officer of the Ludhiana Civil Hospital, and a team of three doctors of the Civil Hospital conducted the post-mortem. Ishmeet's viscera had been sent to laboratories at Kharar and Patiala's Rajindra Medical College.

Talking about the injury on his head, the doctor said it was a minor abrasion, which could have been caused if he hit the floor of the swimming pool. But this abrasion could not be the cause of his death.

Ishmeet, winner of reality show Star Voice of India [Images], had gone to the Maldives for a stage show on Friday. After the post-mortem, Ishmeet's body was taken to his home in Ludhiana, Punjab. He will be given a state funeral today.
