Jagjit Singh performs for city's martyrs

A Ganesh Nadar | December 19, 2008 16:58 IST

Jagjit Singh, the king of the ghazal, enthralled audiences on December 17 at Mumbai's Nehru Centre.

The houseful show was dedicated to the martyrs who laid down their lives to fight terrorism in Mumbai. The heroes's names were written on a banner on stage.

Jagjit Singh has decided to do two shows, free of cost, for these victims -- the next will be held on December 26 at the same venue.

The crowd sat spell-bound, as every syllable and every beat could be heard in the auditorium. Jagjit Singh put his heart and soul into his performance, and every song was applauded by the appreciative crowd.

The event was organised by the India First Foundation and Jaspal Enterprises Limited. Top policemen like Director General of Police S S Virk attended the show, which was compered by retired DGP T K Chowdhury.

Among the donors were India First Foundation (Rs 6 lakhs), HDIL (Rs 3 lakhs), Punjab National Bank [Get Quote] and Bank of Maharashtra [Get Quote] (Rs 2 lakhs each). The money from the sale of tickets amounted to Rs 10 lakhs. The cheques were handed over to Jagjit Singh, who gave them to Virk, who will hand it over to Mumbai Police Commissioner Hassan Ghafoor.
