LeRoi Moore, the renowned saxophonist for Dave Matthews Band, died yesterday of complications from injuries he suffered in an all-terrain vehicle accident. He was 46.

The accident in question took place almost two months ago, and the exact cause of death has not yet been revealed.

On June 30, Moore crashed his ATV on his farm outside Charlottesville, Virginia, but was discharged and returned to his Los Angeles home to begin physical therapy. He later returned to the hospital after experiencing complications during recovery.

Though Dave Matthews is the band's lead singer and namesake, Moore's trademark style on the sax earned him legions of fans, including many who asserted he was the band's true heart. Known for his ubiquitous dark sunglasses, Moore had both classical and jazz training, according to the band's Web site.

The band formed in 1991 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Moore and Dave Matthews were the first two members.

Dave Matthews band burst out from the underground circuit with the album Under the Table and Dreaming and won a Grammy in 1997 for So Much to Say off its second album Crash. Other hits include Crash Into Me and Satellite.

Saxophonist Jeff Coffin, who played with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, has been sitting in for Moore during the band's summer tour.
