Lakshya slips overseas!

Arthur J Pais | June 30, 2004 14:24 IST

A still from LakshyaThe much-hyped Lakshya could not buck the trend for most Bollywood films that slip by about 55 per cent in its second week in North America.

The film's American distributor, UTV, had hoped that word of mouth about Lakshya being more than a war film would bring in new audiences in the consecutive week. The Hrithik Roshan starrer, however, lost about 62 per cent of its box-office in its second weekend while still retaining the screen count (57) as in the opening week. Its American gross reached $650,000. The film would be lucky to reach the $800,000 mark.

Directed by Farhan Akhtar, Lakshya is a washout in the United Kingdom. Though it is still on the top 10 list, it has come down to the tenth position from the seventh. It lost about 62 per cent of its clout in the second weekend and could disappear from the theatres in a week. It was showing in more than 30 theatres across the United Kingdom in its second weekend. It took a mere $90,000 in the UK, bringing its total to $400,000. It would be a miracle if it reaches the $500,000 benchmark in the UK.

The surprise hit of the year, Hum Tum, grossed over $850,000 in England and America in just about four weeks.

A still from Main Hoon NaIt can be safely said that Main Hoon Na, with its $3.6 million gross on both sides of the Atlantic, is the biggest money-spinner so far.

Here's how: In England, Main Hoon Na too came down by 62 per cent in its second weekend. But because its first week collection was so high, it still made about $300,000 in its second week at the tenth position on the box-office chart. Lakshya, on the other hand, earned a mere $90,000.

The only film that appears to be capable of challenging that figure is Ashutosh Gowariker's Swades, featuring Shah Rukh Khan. The film is slated for an August 15 release.
